Vet’s Park

The Vet’s Park Neighborhood

Vet’s Park gets its name, and much of its character, from Veterans Memorial Park, at the corner of Overland and Culver. The neighborhood runs south to Ballona Creek and west to Sepulveda Blvd., with Culver Blvd. along the north edge and Overland Ave. along the east. Veterans Memorial Park is the official name, but residents warmly refer to it as Vet’s Park.

The park’s Veterans Memorial Building, known locally as “Basketorium,” hosts city meetings, performances, and cultural celebrations. Every summer, the park also hosts Fiesta La Ballona, a festival that began as a weeklong celebration of local heritage. The rest of Vet’s Park is quiet, tree-lined streets, with the park, schools, and civic buildings close enough to walk to.

How Walkable Is Vet’s Park?

A home on Greenlawn Ave. in Vet’s Park receives a Walk Score of 73, “Very Walkable.” You can do most daily activities on foot: school drop-offs, a stroll through the park, or a quick run to the local shops. The same address scores 84 for biking, rated “Very Bikeable,” so you can enjoy a bike ride instead.

Scores can vary by address, so check the one for the home you’re considering.

What Schools Are Near Vet’s Park?

Vet’s Park is served by the Culver City Unified School District (CCUSD). Three public schools sit next to each other along Elenda St. and Farragut Dr. on the south end of the neighborhood: Farragut Elementary School, Culver City Middle School, and Culver City High School.

Each is about half a mile from Veterans Memorial Park, so a walk to school is realistic for many homes. Attendance zones are set by address, so confirm with CCUSD which school serves a specific home.

Buses, Trains, and Bike Paths in Vet’s Park

Culver CityBus Lines 3, 5, 6, and 7 serve Vet’s Park, with stops at Culver Blvd. and Overland Ave., and nearby intersections. The buses connect the neighborhood to downtown Culver City, West LA, and beyond, and Line 5 runs along Braddock Dr. on school days and serves Culver City Middle and High Schools.

For the train, the Metro E Line’s Palms station sits just over a mile north of the neighborhood, with service to Santa Monica and Downtown LA. And cyclists can connect with the Ballona Creek Bike Path along the neighborhood’s southern edge.

Veterans Memorial Park: The Neighborhood’s Green Heart

Veterans Memorial Park is a 12.9-acre community park located at 4117 Overland Ave., and it gives the neighborhood its name. Residents can enjoy basketball and tennis courts, a handball wall, a playground, shaded picnic tables, barbecue grills, restrooms, and a walking and jogging path, plus a pooch path for dogs.

The Culver City Plunge, the public pool, is also available at the park. And for a longer run or ride, the Ballona Creek Bike Path follows the creek along the neighborhood’s south side.
