How to Prepare for the Career Fair
Start with research
A few days before the fair, take time to look up the companies that will be attending. Visit their websites, read about the work they do, and write down a few notes or questions. You don’t need to memorize everything, but knowing the basics will help you feel more confident and stand out when you talk to recruiters. Try to pick five to ten companies you’re most interested in, and plan to visit their booths first.
Polish your resume
Bring about 10 to 15 copies of a clean, updated resume. Keep it to one page if possible, and make sure it highlights your most recent work, education, and skills. If you’re applying to different types of jobs—like education, environmental work, or office roles—you can bring different versions tailored to each industry. A recruiter should be able to quickly understand who you are and what you’re looking for just by scanning your resume.
Practice your introduction
A good first impression matters. Think about what you want to say when someone asks, “Tell me about yourself.” You might start with your name, what you’re studying or where you’ve worked, and what kind of job or internship you’re looking for. Keep it short and positive—something like:
“Hi, I’m Mia. I’m a recent graduate from West LA College, and I’m interested in working with youth programs. I’d love to hear more about what roles your organization is hiring for.”
Dress for success
You don’t need a suit and tie, but your clothes should be neat, clean, and professional. Business casual usually works best—think dress pants, nice shoes, a button-up shirt, blouse, or a sweater. The goal is to look put-together and confident. You want the employers to remember you for your enthusiasm and potential—not your hoodie or flip-flops.
Bring the right supplies
In addition to your resumes, bring a folder or bag to hold materials you collect. A notebook and pen are also useful for jotting down important names or follow-up instructions. If you have a personal business card or LinkedIn profile, bring that too. Make sure your phone is charged in case someone asks for a digital connection or you want to take notes.
Be ready to ask and answer questions
When you meet employers, don’t just wait for them to talk. You need to ask thoughtful questions! You can ask what types of roles they’re hiring for, what skills they value most, or what their company culture is like. At the same time, be prepared to answer basic questions about yourself, like why you’re interested in their organization or what kind of role you’re looking for.
Follow up afterward
After the fair, take time to reach out to the people you met. A short thank-you email or LinkedIn message goes a long way. Remind them of who you are, express your interest, and thank them for their time. Following up shows that you’re serious. It also helps them remember you when it’s time to make hiring decisions.
This Is Your Moment
Whether you’re just starting out or reinventing your career path, the Building Resilient Futures Career Fair is a chance to move forward with purpose. You’ll leave with more than a stack of business cards—you’ll gain real insight, new confidence, and maybe even your next job. So, in summary:
